Are you working on multiple PhDs in obscure and difficult topics? Can you speak multiple languages, including alienese? Do you suspect, if handed the controls, you could complete the Kessel Run in fewer parsecs than Han Solo? If you said yes to any of these questions you might want to consider becoming an astronaut. In fact, if you’re an American citizen, there’s never been a better time to see if you’ve got the right stuff. NASA has opened up their astronaut corps to the few, the proud, the willing to get motion sickness in zero gravity. To boldly vomit where few have vomited before. In the olden days, you either had to be a chimpanzee or an Air Force test pilot to be allowed to take the controls of a genuine NASA rocket and break free from the surly chains of gravity. When NASA finally upgraded its astronaut corps from chimps to humans in the 1950s to begin the Mercury program, they decided they’d only allow test pilots to apply for the first missions. To fit in the cramped cabin, you had to physically be no taller than 180 cm (5’ 11”), and weigh no more than 82 kg (180 pounds). You needed to have book smarts, too. Astronaut candidates needed at least a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent, but still be under 40 years old. But most importantly, you had to be a test pilot with at least 1,500 hours of flying time and the ability to fly jets. If you didn’t have hours behind the stick, piloting the most insane flying machines dreamt up by those nutty scientists, well then you didn’t have the right stuff. Those qualifications continued through the Gemini and Apollo program, although, they relaxed them somewhat, allowing younger astronauts, and those with less flight time. In the recruitment of astronauts in 1965, they allowed a new class of scientist-astronauts; folks with science degrees and no flight time. The most famous of these was Jack Schmitt, a geologist who walked on the Moon with Apollo 17. NASA now understands that they need astronauts with a wide range of space-based skills, and not just a bunch of test pilots. There are two kinds of people who get to go to space: pilots and mission specialists. The first category are the commanders and pilot astronauts - the folks who actually fly the spacecraft. They’re the ones with thousands of hours behind the stick of a modern jet, the more cockamamie the better. To be qualified as a pilot astronaut, you need to have at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in a jet aircraft. You need to be healthy, with normal blood pressure, good vision and a height between 158 - 191 cm (62 and 75 inches). There are no longer any age restrictions, so astronauts have been selected between 26 and 46 years old. You need a degree in some kind of space-related science, like engineering, mathematics, biological science and physical science. But that’s a minimum. You really want to have an advanced degree, or even multiple degrees. So, if you’re a healthy, eagle-eyed test pilot with a few advanced degrees, you should apply. The other category is the mission specialists. These are the astronauts with specialties that will come into play on a space mission. For example: doctors, engineers, particle physicists, xenobiologists, alien translators, droid mechanics, etc. Since you won’t be required to fly the spacecraft, test pilot experience isn’t necessary, but you’ll need to have the same physical health as the pilot astronaut. Well, are you going to sign up and become an astronaut? Where do you think your mission will go? Tell us in the comments below. In our next episode, we finally decide whether we should send humans back to the Moon or off to Mars. Want to hear that decision? SOUNDBITE: (English) William Oefelein, Navy pilot: "For now I have just been looking at this space shuttle as another flying opportunity, but I think once I am floating around in it, it will seem a little different than the other airplanes I have flown." POOL Orlando, Florida - 6 February, 2007 13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Donald Lykkebak, Lawyer for US Navy Captain Lisa Nowak: "She is employed at NASA, at the Johnson Space Centre. I have been in communication with the legal council at the Johnson Space Centre as recently as this morning, and her commanding officer Coronial Steve Lindsay, whose card I placed on the bench in front of you, came to Orlando last night and he is in the courtroom today. If the court has any questions with reference to her position at the Johnson Space Centre, it is our intent that once a reasonable bond is posted, that she will return to Houston and the Johnson Space Centre. They are quite supportive in this circumstance." NASA TV FILE - Houston, Texas 14. Nowak getting suited up for water survival training 15. Nowak hanging over the water then being dropped into water STORYLINE An American astronaut appeared in court on charges of attempting to kidnap a romantic rival in a bizarre plot in which she donned a disguise and wore nappies during her 900-mile (1,500 kilometre) drive so that she did not have to stop to urinate. US Navy Captain Lisa Nowak, 43, a robotics specialist who flew last July on a shuttle mission to the international space station, drove from her home in Houston, Texas, to Orlando International Airport, Florida, donned a disguise and was armed with a BB gun and pepper spray when she confronted Colleen Shipman, who she believed was romantically involved with Navy Commander William Oefelein. During the drive, she wore nappies, as astronauts do during launch and re-entry, so she would not have to stop to urinate. In court on Tuesday, the judge said Nowak could be released on US 15,500 dollars bond under the condition that she does not contact her alleged victim. She said "yes" when the judge asked her if she understood not to contact the woman. "It is our intent that once a reasonable bond is posted, that she will return to Houston and the Johnson Space Center," Nowak's attorney, Donald Lykkebak, told the court. "They are quite supportive in this circumstance," he said. Nowak, a married mother of three, stood in a jail uniform, with her head down as the hearing was under way. Along with the attempted kidnapping charge, she also faces charges of attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. Nowak and Oefelein, 41, were both first-time fliers during separate shuttle missions last year. They trained together but never flew together. Nowak told police that her relationship with Oefelein, who is unmarried, was "more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship," according to an arrest affidavit. FULL EPISODE: http://londonrealacademy.com/episodes/ Chris Hadfield is a retired Canadian astronaut who was the first Canadian to walk in space. An engineer and former Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot, Chris Hadfield has flown two space shuttle missions and served as commander of the International Space Station. Chris, who was raised on a farm in southern Ontario, was inspired as a child when he watched the Apollo 11 Moon landing on TV. He attended high school in Oakville and Milton and earned his glider pilot licence as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces and earned an engineering degree at Royal Military College. While in the military he learned to fly various types of aircraft and eventually became a test pilot and flew several experimental planes. As part of an exchange program with the United States Navy and United States Air Force, he obtained a master's degree in aviation systems at the University of Tennessee Space Institute. In 1992, he was accepted into the Canadian astronaut program by the Canadian Space Agency. He first flew in space aboard STS-74 in November 1995 as a mission specialist. During the mission he visited the Russian space station Mir. In April 2001 he flew again on STS-100 and visited the International Space Station (ISS), where he walked in space and helped to install the Canadarm2. In December 2012 he flew for a third time aboard Soyuz TMA-07M and joined Expedition 34 on the ISS. He was a member of this expedition until March 2013 when he became the commander of the ISS as part of Expedition 35. He was responsible for a crew of five astronauts and helped to run dozens of scientific experiments dealing with the impact of low gravity on human biology. During the mission he also gained popularity by chronicling life aboard the space station and taking pictures of the earth and posting them through Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr to a large following of people around the world. He was a guest on television news and talk shows and gained popularity by playing the International Space Station's guitar in space. His mission ended in May 2013 when he returned to earth. Shortly after returning, he announced his retirement, capping a 35-year career as a military pilot and an astronaut.
